A strange belief indeed !
Iles Vierges does indeed mean Virgin Islans, but it seems much more likely that he means the British Virgin Islands. Why should you assume otherwise ?
In fact, the official name of the British Overseas Territory is simply "The Virgin Islands". Link (http)
The word "British" is only applied for convenience to avoid confusion .
